Acrobatic Gymnastics (Acro) is a competitive gymnastics discipline where partnerships of gymnasts work together and perform elements consisting of acrobatic group skills, dance and tumbling, set to music on the 12x12m sprung floor. Within the discipline there are 2-3 types of routines:
  • a balance routine where the focus is on strength, flexibility, handstands and stability;
  • a dynamic routine which includes throws, catches, tumbling, flips and somersaults;
  • and in the high levels, a combined routine which includes the best elements from the balance and dynamic routines.
In competition, athletes compete their routines to music which have been choreographed specifically for them. Partnerships are judged on their execution of skills, difficulty of elements and artistry/dance to give them a combined score for each routine. In Australia, there is 2 competitive pathways; the National Stream including Levels 1-10, and the International elite stream including Junior and Senior age categories.

Within the sport there are 5 categories in which athletes can compete which encompass both girls and boys.
  • Women’s Pair (girl base + girl flyer)
  • Men’s Pair (boy base + boy flyer)
  • Mixed Pair (boy base + girl flyer)
  • Women’s Trio (2 girl bases + girl flyer)
  • Men’s Four (2 boy bases, 1 boy middle + boy flyer)

Our Philosophy + Programs at Gladesville:
Here at Gladesville, we are always aiming to provide an encouraging and positive environment for acrobats of all ages and abilities to develop gymnastics and acrobatic skills in a safe space. Acrobatics is a team based sport that not only develops strength, flexibility and power, but teaches kids to work in a team, challenges the mind and promotes confidence. Having a high-performance team of acrobats in our gym helps inspire the younger athletes to aim for greatness whilst having fun in the sport as they develop.

We offer classes for all ages and abilities in acrobatics. Starting with our mini-development classes right up to our elite level programs.

Mini-development: Our minis are the beginning point for Acro. The classes are aimed for 5-7 year olds showing specific potential for acrobatics and gymnastics. This class focuses on the basics of strength and flexibility required for acrobatics, whilst proving a fun and interactive environment that develops confidence in their own abilities.

State-Stream: Our State-Stream program is the starting point for our competitive athletes. Kids in this class will start to do group work and develop acrobatic skills ready for competition. Competition starts at Level 1 and progress through to Level 5, with the aim of making a State Championships. This class is a combination of fun and effort that aims to progress kids through the levels in a positive environment.

National-Team: Our National-Team program is for our level 6-7 competitive acrobatics striving to represent NSW at the National Championships. This program is designed to develop the athletes skills to be competitive at a National level and prepare them for the highest level of completion, whilst focusing on the goals of the individual groups and athletes.

High-Performance: Our High-Performance program is for Elite level 8-10 and International level athletes. Our level 8-10 athletes work towards the National Championships, often competing double somersaults and difficult handstand elements. Our international level acrobats compete in the most difficult categories in acrobatics and train to be selected on the Australian Squads and Australian Team with the ultimate aim of representing Australia at the Junior and Senior World Championships.
